Praise for Jesus from A to Z

“Stunning oil paintings with glowing colors and a flattened perspective provide memorable visual impact in this alphabetical introduction to important people, events and stories from the life of Jesus. A great deal of information is packed into the short text blocks, but Yoswa’s compelling art is the star of this alphabetical show.”

Kirkus Reviews, March 2009

“Jesus From A to Z is an exceptionally written and beautifully illustrated book highlighting Jesus’ life. This book would make an excellent keepsake for every household whether you’re raising children, enjoying grandchildren or even volunteer as a Sunday school teacher. (From “Kirkus Reviews”)

Stunning oil paintings with glowing colors and a flattened perspective provide memorable visual impact in this alphabetical introduction to important people, events and stories from the life of Jesus. The book's striking design has a large trim size with an unusually wide horizontal orientation, using double-page spreads to showcase the art in a size that will work well for reading to a group.
Each letter focuses on one word that relates to the life of Jesus, with a brief, easy-to-understand paragraph of text about each term. The book's alphabetical structure, however, shuffles the traditional chronology, which may require some additional explanation for younger readers.

The pages for the problematic letter Q step outside the framework of the text to discuss quiet time for the reader to think of God and Jesus, a departure (though a quiet one) from the rest of the alphabetical choices. A great deal of information is packed into the short text blocks, but Yoswa's compelling art is the star of this alphabetical show. (Picture book/religion. Ages 4-9.)

Jesus from A to Z

By Kevin Graham
Published by Windom Publishing

(Reviewed by Amy Loos)

Jesus From A to Z is an exceptionally written and beautifully illustrated book highlighting Jesus’ life and ministry. Each letter of the alphabet capitalizes on one specific event or trait in Christ’s life. These alphabetical lessons allow children to learn how Christ’s love for each and every person was shown through his teachings and miracles.

This book would make an excellent keepsake for every household whether you’re raising children, enjoying grandchildren or even volunteer as a Sunday school teacher.

While this book is concise, I must say I absolutely loved it! Easy to read, wonderful to look at and written in such a way that draws every reader into the story of Christ’s life.

For example, author Kevin Graham chooses the words “Via Dolorosa” for the letter V, which in Latin means, “the way of sadness.” This “way” describes the road Christ walked as he was carrying the wooden cross on which he would be crucified. According to the author many people still walk Via Dolorosa as a way to remember Christ’s sacrifice for our sins and as a way to show God’s love for all.

Armchair Interviews says: Jesus From A to Z is a must-have!

Book tells about Jesus' life from angels to Zaccheus

by Ann Butler
The Durango Herald

From wood blocks to nursery rhymes and songs, children learn a lot of lessons along with the alphabet. Former Durango resident Kevin Graham has written a book designed to teach children the story of Christ in the time-honored tradition.

Graham, whose family moved to Durango in 1971 when he was 12, grew up attending the First United Methodist Church of Durango. His parents, Reg and Beverly Graham, and his brother, former City Councilor Scott Graham, still live here.

“I started by putting together a list of words for each letter,” he said in a phone interview from his home in the Denver area. “I was having lunch with a pastor from another denomination and showed her the list. She asked me what church I grew up in. I told her, and she said, ‘It shows.’”

“Parents, grandparents and even Sunday
school teachers will find the book a valuable
and enjoyable read and teaching tool.”

He describes the book as a first building block to teach simple stories about Jesus’ life, teachings and miracles to children ages 5 to 10. The applicable range is probably more like 4 to 8 years. Small children will find the lessons easy and on their level. Graham says that they are also a great starting place for adults to tell some of their favorite stories from the New Testament. (He emphasizes the point by designating “N” for New Testament.)

“I came to appreciate how Christ and God were presented in a kind and loving way,” Graham said about the Methodist Church. “It can be kind of gentle.”

Other reviewers have noted Graham’s use of the letter “V” with Via Dolorosa, the Street of Sadness in Latin, the route Jesus followed as he carried the cross to Calvary for his crucifixion. I personally wanted to know what he came up with for “Q,” “X” and “Z.” He did not disappoint.

For “Q,” he came up with something every child has experienced – “Quiet,” for quiet time, with the explanation that it’s a time to think about God and Jesus and to be thankful. It’s a graceful way to teach a fundamental aspect of prayer. It’s also the only place where the illustration has a modern feel.

“Explain” was Graham’s clever way of finding a use for “X,” talking about how Jesus used parables to explain many of his lessons. “It’s the only place I cheated a bit,” he said.

You’ll have to read the book to find out the rest of the letters, but be sure to take time to look at the deceptively simple, rich illustrations by Jennifer Yoswa. While she appears to paint in broad strokes with simple drawing, the detail in shadings, colors and portrayal of the lesson at hand had me going back for second and third looks. I imagine children would have great fun looking for all those fine points in the art.

Graham, who has had 10 other books and a number of freelance articles and columns published, has achieved his goal. Parents, grandparents and even Sunday school teachers will find the book a valuable and enjoyable read and teaching tool.

This book moved me the moment it was laid in the palms of my hands simply by the illustration on the front cover. The eyes of Jesus really caught me.

As I read the book, I was very pleased about how the author, Kevin Graham, touched upon the key stories of Jesus’ life in such a condensed – yet complete – way for young minds to grasp. Not only is the content easy for children to understand, but the illustrations by Jennifer Yoswa also add such a special tenderness at just the right moments.

The angel comforting Mary brought me to tears, and the woman touching Jesus’ robe also was very moving and captivating. The use of color was magical in the skies, etc. Absolutely amazing!

Thank you, Kevin and Jennifer, as you have fulfilled a higher calling by producing this book from your hearts to share with God’s beautiful children. I am an educator, and I am thrilled and blessed to add this book to my teaching curriculum. I send you the greatest blessings for your future, and I pray that you both will be called upon again to continue the enchantment you have captured with your spirits and creativity.

Thank you for your unique and enchanting talents. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

(Comments from the Promise Keepers organization)

This book will be a must for my family. The illustrations are beautiful and grab the attention of both readers and viewing audience alike. The stories are simple, yet interesting. It is easy to read and follow for children who are just beginning to read and those who read well. A must-have for all family libraries.

–Victor Lane, Promise Keepers

The author and the illustrator have done a magnificent job with “Jesus from A to Z.” I would recommend the book to everyone.

I enjoyed reading this book with my ten-year-old grandson. My nine-year-old granddaughter preferred to read it on her own. They both enjoyed it very much and felt they learned more from some of the stories than they already knew.
Each story is short, which is important for the age level the book is designed for (ages five to ten years old). The pictures are bright with vivid colors, yet simple and not too busy.

I would not only want to include this in our personal home library, but I also think it should be included in the preferred reading lists for church Sunday School classrooms for these

Jesus From A to Z

Kevin Graham, author
Jennifer Yoswa, illustrator
Wisdom Publishing Co.
ISBN: 9780970032317

Jesus From A to Z is an alphabet book for Christian children age five to ten. Each letter of the alphabet is connected to a word that represents a concept important to Jesus Christ’s life and teachings.

The thoughtful color illustrations are reminiscent of a simplified style of Renaissance art, and the text reinforces basic lessons about the Christian faith. For example:

“[A is for] Angels – Angels are God’s helpers who appear at special times. An angel named Gabriel came to tell Mary that she would have a baby and become the mother of Jesus. Other angels told the shepherds to go to the town of Bethlehem to see Jesus the night he was born. Angels appeared at different times in Jesus’ life. They helped bring God’s word to everyone.”
